In 1970, during the latter days of the Native American Indian occupation, four historic buildings were burned to the ground. These important structures were the Warden’s house, the Medical Technician’s house, and the Lighthouse keepers quarters, all on the top level of Alcatraz next to the Cell House. The fourth structure was the Officers Club, formerly the military PX on the lower level just up the road from the dock. Sometime after these fires, the government demolished the three modern apartments, A, B, and C buildings, as well as the Duplex, housing the Associate Warden and Captain of the Guard, and the four cottages, all surrounding the Parade ground.
